The Active Wāhine Group Fitness Program at Pioneer Stadium has become more than just a fitness initiative - it’s a place of belonging, connection and confidence-building for international and exchange students navigating a new environment
This year, a group of international students from Cashmere High School have joined the weekly group fitness sessions as part of their school’s involvement in the Active Wāhine initiative. The program, delivered in partnership with Christchurch City Council, offers a range of women-only fitness classes that are fun, welcoming and inclusive - the perfect environment for newcomers looking to settle into Kiwi school life.
Student Insights: Building Friendships, Confidence, and Connection
The international students consistently reflected on how much they enjoyed the positive energy of the sessions and the ability to take part in something along side local students,
“There’s always good energy and positive vibes. It’s fun and it’s nice to do with your friends”
More importantly, the program helped break down social barriers often experienced by students who primarily engage in activities within their own international groups,
“Since joining, we feel more confident and more comfortable being around new people. It makes you feel part of something that is for everyone”
The girls expressed that having the chance to join in regular group fitness with other students helped them feel more integrated into school life and gave them the confidence to branch out and make new friendships
"We would definitely recommend it to other international students. It’s funny, fun, and there are different classes each week”
A Teachers Perspective
The international department teacher supporting the group praised the impact the program had on student wellbeing and social integration:
“Active Wāhine has given our international students a safe, social, and active way to connect with the wider school community. It’s something they look forward to each week and it’s been a great way for them to step outside of their comfort zones in a really positive and supported environment”
The Active Wāhine Group Fitness Program has had a meaningful impact on international students, not only supporting their physical wellbeing but also providing a platform for social connection, cultural exchange, and confidence building. It’s powerful example of how sport and recreation can foster a sense of belonging - no matter where in the world a student has come from
