30th ZONTA SPORTS AWARDS Winner Profiles 2021 Congratulations to all winners, finalists and those nominated for Category Five of the 2021 Zonta Sports Awards. CATEGORY FIVE: The awards for the most outstanding team of young sportswomen and sportsmen or mixed team. Girls WINNER - Burnside High School Volleyball Senior A Team. The Burnside High School Volleyball team have been unbeaten winning the local weekly competition, Regional and South Island Championships as well as the National Secondary Schools’ Championships.Two players in this team, Rosa Vesty and Taylah Holdem were also winners of the National Secondary School Beach Volleyball title. Special mention to the Highly Commended recipients - Rangi Ruru Girls’ School Rowing Under 18 Coxed Eight. Christchurch Girls’ High School, Cricket First XI and Christchurch Girls’ High School Rowing Under 18 Coxed Four. Boys WINNER - Christ’s College, Rowing Under 18 Coxed Eight. Already champions at Regional and South Island Regatta’s, the Christ’s College Rowing Eight capped off an outstanding season in winning the prestigious Maadi Cup in April this year. Special mention to the Highly Commended recipients - St Bede’s College Sevens Rugby. Mixed WINNER - Lincoln High School Touch. Girls WINNER - Emily Bowden from Christchurch Girls’ High School for Rowing.As a rower, Emily has achieved outstanding success during 2021 at Regional, South Island and National Championship events in multiple boats; Pairs, Fours and Eights.In recognition of her ability Emily was selected for the U19 NZ Junior Women’s Coxless Four.Special mentions to the Highly Commended recipients - Orla Fitzgerald from Christchurch Girls’ High School for Rowing, Jorja Miller from Christchurch Girls’ High School for Sevens and Amelia Sykes from Avonside Girls’ High School for Cycling. The latest update from Touch New Zealand in regard to NZSS championship.School Sport NZ, in consultation with Touch New Zealand (TNZ) have confirmed the cancellation of Term 4 sport which will see the 2021 Bunnings NZSS Touch Championship cancelled for this year. The event was set to be held from 17th – 19th December 2021 in Rotorua, however, the current alert level system restrictions impact greatly on the viability of School Sport events scheduled for Term 4 and the difficult decision to cancel the event was made.
