Deb Bowry

Sport Operations Co-ordinator

Deb was a proud recipient winner of the 2010 Canterbury Sports Outstanding Overall Administrator of the Year Award, due to the successful 2010 XV FINA Women’s Water Polo World Cup at QEII Sport and Recreation Centre. Back in 2003, Deb decided to re-educate, as had aspirations to be a schoolteacher and applied at the University of Canterbury’s Sport Coaching degree to complete a 3-year degree and then do a post- graduate year in secondary school, but unforeseen circumstances, studies could not be completed. From a governance role, Deb was on the New Zealand Water Polo Board for 5 years and learnt the governance side of sport. In November last year, Deb was elected on the Surfing NZ Board.

Working in the sports industry, was always Deb’s passion and this varied from the Beach Education Manager for Surf Life Saving Canterbury, working in the sports office at Burnside HS, as well as being, Canterbury Water Polo’s first fully paid development officer from 2008-13. Working through the 2011 earthquakes was a challenge for all aquatic sports for a number of years.

Aquatic sports always have Deb’s passion but also enjoyed playing football and touch. Skiing has been added to the list of interests, as well as stand up paddle boarding.

A people’s person, Deb is very much a team player, in all facets of life. Working for School Sport Canterbury, is, enjoyable to say the least, dealing with all personnel from all our regions sports office, and know from experience, is a challenging role, but giving Rangatahi opportunities to be involved in physical activity and any opportunity to play sport and have fun, as winning is not everything.
