Indoor Football Rules

All Centres – Canterbury Secondary Schools Competition

The Team:      A team consists of five players, one of whom shall be the goalkeeper, with unlimited substitutions.  Substitutions can only be made by a team when its goalkeeper has possession of the ball, a goal is scored, at half time, or in the event of an injury.  No team can start a game with less than four players.  Teams may consist of all boys, all girls, or of any combination of boys and girls.  There are no playing restrictions on either gender, nor any bonus points for goals scored by girl players.  Where practical within the limits imposed by team entries, teams of similar composition will be drawn to play each other.

The Game:     The game is played in two 14 minute halves, with a halftime break not exceeding two minutes.

Officials:         The Centre shall provide the referee who shall control the game, operate the scoreboard, and act as timekeeper.  The referee’s interpretation of the rules shall be final.  Player dissent or misconduct can result in a 2-minute sin bin with or without a prior warning.  A repeat occurrence may result in the player being sent off for the remainder of the game, with no substitute allowed.  The Sports Director’s Office is to be notified of all such sendings off, and may impose any further penalty it considers appropriate after consultation with the Centre, and the offending team’s manager/school Head of Sport.

Uniforms:        A reasonable standard of uniform is required.  School PE uniform is acceptable.  Players will not be permitted on court wearing jeans or in street clothes or non-athletic type footwear.  The goal keeper should wear a different coloured shirt to the remainder of the team

Lateness:        Games are expected to commence on time.  It is recognised that the structure of Wednesday secondary school sport can result in teams from schools far distant from the venue, therefore games begin at 3.15pm.   Late starting games are shortened so that subsequent games will commence on time.

General:         (Major rules)

Tackling from behind or sliding is not allowed.  Side tackles are allowed depending upon the referees discretion in the situation of a 50-50 ball.

Where a foul has occurred the referee may elect not to award a free kick, but to allow play to continue under the Advantage rule.  The referee’s decision is final.

Intentional hand ball will result in a penalty regardless of the whereabouts of the infringement.  Unintentional hand ball will result in a free kick.

`                       A player cannot hold onto the net or support himself while playing the ball.  A free kick shall apply.

A player’s leg cannot be lifted above hip height when attempting to kick the ball.

The ball is considered to be “live” at all times off all nets, although a goal cannot be scored directly from any net.

A goal is scored when the whole ball has passed over the goal line.

A player is not permitted to enter the goalkeeper’s area or play the ball if inside the goalkeeper’s area.

The goalkeeper cannot kick a ball that is outside the goal area.  The goal keeper may not play the ball in any way if any part of his body touches the ground outside the goal area.  The goal keeper has five seconds to get rid of the ball by either throwing or kicking the ball into play so that it bounces at least once in the goalkeeper’s half before crossing the centre line.

The ball cannot travel over shoulder height otherwise a free kick is awarded.  Play carries on in the case of accidental balls rising above shoulder height (deflections etc).
